Summer in the City

Darmstadt offers five public outdoor swimming pools and ponds during the summer for swimming, sunbathing, relaxing and more.

Arheilger Mühlchen, swimming pond: Idyllically located in the green belt Ruthsenbach in Darmstadt's northern district Arheilgen. The natural lake is used as a public swimming pool since 1924 and is a haven for families with children as well as for those seeking peace and quiet.

DSW-outdoor pool (heated): Located right next to the Nordbad and is surrounded by its spacious open-air grounds. It opened in 1977, is in the ownership of the Darmstadt swimming and water sports clubs (DSW) in 1912 and is particularly suitable for sports-oriented swimming, because it is consistently heated.

Great Woog, swimming pond: The popular bathing lake is located in the heart of the city. It is an island of tranquility and seclusion. The Great Woog is not only a place of recreation and bathing pleasure for the people, the natural paradise is also the meeting place of many water birds, such as mallards, coots and herons.

Mühltalbad: Located in Eberstadt at the foot of Odenwald and Bergstraße with stunning views of the Frankenstein. The bath was opened in July 1959, and it´s special feature is a large window through which you can watch what is happening underwater. The pool is exclusively heated by solar energy.

Hochschulbad: Built 1928, Hochschulbad was one of the first university competition site in Germany and was extensively renovated in 2010. It is located on the TU campus Lichtwiese and offers its students free admission.

Open during the summer season on 17 May 2015 to 13 September 2015.

Outstanding location to study - Exquisite place of residence

Darmstadt is "Excellent Location for professionals and executives"

As the very first regional center in the metropolitan region of Frankfurt-Rhein-Main, Darmstadt has received this award. According to Mayor Partsch the award once again underlines the attractiveness and appeal of the city of Darmstadt as a place of residence for professionals and managers that the city already enjoys. The reconciliation of work and family is an important pillar of the culture of welcome in the city in its importance as a cosmopolitan and international research and technology location. At the same time, the results of the audit, demonstrates the potential of development. In this context, further goals are a new edition of the booklet, Welcome to Darmstadt in English, as well as inventory and targeted approach to the international communities in Darmstadt.

The observed attractiveness of the city of Darmstadt is reflected in a steady influx of young people in the city for both the study and for the first stable job: with around 13.000 new residents each year and an annual growth rate of the total population of about 2000, the largest increase is in the age group 20-40 years. Darmstadt is thus one of 18 German cities to which the term "swarm city" is suitable: The 20-35 year olds are now focusing much more on particular cities than in previous years, the share of this age group in the so-called swarm cities is more than 30 percent above the national average.

The Science Day special is part of the Year of Science 2015 "Future City": Cities are the central place for the development of a sustainable lifestyle. Citizens are the key actors for the implementation of sustainable urban development; the city is its center of life.

Radenko Milak, 365

Exhibition at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt until March 1, 2015

The Kunsthalle Darmstadt shows with 365 the largest project of Radenko Milak. The sequence of 365 black and white watercolors created in day and night work during 2013. Each sheet refers to a "planetary event" (Radenko Milak). War and peace, art and culture, science and technology, space and natural disasters outline the content. Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia and again and again the Balkan provides the space, the last 500 years the time frame of a passable story calendar, which will completely line the Kunsthalle Darmstadt.

Painting, drawing, watercolor and more recently animation are the the artist's preferred means of expression. He finds his material in print media and on the Internet. There are both stationary and silent moving images of historical or time-related events he takes up with the funds of realism and abstraction, sometimes of surrealism. His series of grisaille paintings Intimacy of planetary event (2004-08) are based on a film about the outbreak of the First World War. His 24-part series What else did you see? - I I couldn’t see everything (2010-2012) leads painting and war photography together.

An accompanying publication published by Walther König, with essays by Jonathan Blackwood and Branislav Dimitrijevic, experienced connoisseur of the art scenes in the Balkans will be published.

“Hesse fair changes you"

An exhibition at the foyer of the Justus-Liebig-house 17.11. – 1.12.2014

Since 13th September 2013 Darmstadt is officially a Fair Trade Town. A Fair Trade Town is any community in which people and organizations use their everyday choices to increase sales of Fair Trade products and bring about positive change for farmers and workers in developing countries. Due to the FairTtrade campaign in our city, the Justus-Liebig-house will host the exhibition "Hesse fair changes".

The exhibition informs about Fair Trade and related issues such as demand for sustainability or global learning. The aim is on the one hand to inform people about maladministration and its relation to our consumer behavior and to build an awareness of "fair consumer behavior". At the same time it shows opportunities how each and every individual can become active and get involved to make this world a better place for all of us starting from ones doorstep.

Why is there so much child labor in cocoa farming? Why is it so difficult to buy an ethically correct T-Shirt? Are there ways to make IT products fair? These are examples of questions that the exposition focuses on. It also gives appropriate inspiration for own actions

Barbara Hauck: "Murders"

Crimes and deaths in ancient Darmstadt - the author reads
These bodies are real! Stone dead and yet alive for they were transported to the surface after decades in their dark deep graves. Resurrected to tell their story. They were humans of flesh and blood; all lived in Darmstadt and tragically lost their lives. The cause of death: Arsenic, a stone hammer, a simple pocket knife or rough physical violence. In short, we are dealing with real crime cases from the late 19th and early 20th century, who at the time of their occurrence caused a sensation in Darmstadt and much further.
The event is part of the festivity "100 Years of Forest Cemetery" that last all summer. Admission: € 4.00 for students.

Chronicler of South Africa
"If you stand in front of a photo, and it touches you immediately at heart, then it is art. If you need to talk a lot about a picture, then something is wrong. Look at the works of famous artists in history, they don´t need many words, they fascinate us at first glance. "Schadeberg
The retrospective pays tribute to the work of the photographer Jürgen Schadeberg, which includes six decades of South African history. He is Art Director of the lifestyle magazine "Drum" founded in 1951 as well as a witness of the political conflicts of the apartheid. Back in Europe, Schadeberg captures popular culture and class differences firmly with the camera and succeeds with snapshots of rock idols such as Mick Jagger backstage.
On display are some 180 photographs until the 29th of June 2014 in the Kunsthalle Darmstadt

Darmstadt bread

Made of grains from Oberfeld

Darmstadt bears the title city of science and has a lot of internationally active companies. A further characteristic is the Art Nouveau Ensemble at the Mathildenhöhe but there is also another picture.

In the east of Darmstadt, behind the hills Mathilden- and Rosenhöhe stretches a 135 hectare area known as Oberfeld. This is one of the last agricultural zones in Darmstadt. The farm estate Hofgut, a former dairy farm built in 1892 belonged to the Hessian Archdukes – today the farm buildings and the housing for the workers which were a part of the Hessian Exhibition for Pure and Applied Art at Mathildenhöhe in 1908 together with the neighbored Dreibrunnenquelle the city’s oldest water supply well are all listed as historic monuments.

The farming at the Hofgut is currently operated by Hofgut Oberfeld Landwirtschaft AG carrying out ecological agriculture and selling their products directly. Stone oven baked bread and rolls from Demeter crops grown and harvested at Oberfeld are among those products.

From Mondays to Saturdays 7 am to 9 am and Sundays 8 am to 9 am you can buy fresh rolls in the bakery and later on in the farm shop together with fresh bread.

Make your own whole-grain bread and pretzel-croissant

You can learn it in the Volkshochschule

Did you always want to bake your own bread? Then you will find support in the Volkshochschule (adult education centre). In a beginner's course you will gain fundamental information whilst during a weekend advanced course there will be a lot of baking: baguette and ciabatta, rolls, pretzels or grissini made of rye, wheat or spelt.

The summer program of Volkshochschule Darmstadt contains beside both bread baking courses more than 650 additional offers.

Lemonade and cheesecake

Hofcafé is looking for student helpers.

This café in the old smithy right beside the farm shop is a meeting place for both young and old from Darmstadt and its surroundings. The menu offers farm-own products such as cakes made from own crops and eggs and Hofgut-Muesli. The team is looking for supporting student helpers. Are you interested?

Darmstadt in the Ranking of German Cities: Position 6 out of 402

Population growth and higher skilled jobs

The Prognos study examined 402 counties and cities regarding their future opportunities. The result: Darmstadt ranked 6th and is the only city in the top ten outside Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

The map significantly shows the nationwide trend: the prosperous south is clearly distinguished from the flagging north and northeast. And because the study was implemented for the fourth time there is another discernible trend: the boom regions have even grown stronger whilst the weak regions have grown weaker.

Darmstadt has improved its ranking clearly since the first study in 2007 from position 29 through rank 12 to position 6. Darmstadt occupies an excellent 1st position in the category “demography” and a second position regarding labour market which is broadly diversified in Darmstadt. The city is above-average regarding highly qualified jobs in research and science at a low unemployment rate.
