The Jazzinstitut
Darmstadt, a municipal institute of the city of Darmstadt,
is Europe's largest public research archive on jazz. It holds specialized
books, periodicals, sheet music, records, photographs as well as
posters and other memorabilia. It provides services for researchers
(journalists, musicologists, students), as well as for the music
community, for musicians and music educators, working to broaden
the audience of jazz as an African American music which has become
a major influence on world culture. The Jazzinstitut Darmstadt is
the foremost institute of its kind in Europe and acknowledged for
its varied services by American colleagues as well. The Jazzinstitut
resides in a small baroque palais built 1709-1725. The historical
cave underneath the Jazzinstitut is being used for intimate concerts,
among them the concert series "JazzTalk".
The Jazzinstitut
is a municipal institute founded and financed by the city
of Darmstadt.

| The
Jazzinstitut's treasure -- antiquarian books
The
perfect present for jazz lovers!
As many other archives,
the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt has a lot of doublettes, triplettes, quadruplettes.
Much of this is highly regarded material, and we would not part with
it. Some material, though, is here in such quantities that we decided
to open this online "shop" in order to finance the further
care and restoration of the rest of our collection. |

| Report
about current activities of the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt
The Jazzinstitut
Darmstadt is involved in innumerable projects all over the world. Many
of these are coordinated from the historic Bessunger Kavaliershaus.
For others we travel around the world, for lectures, conferences, meetings,
exhibitions. In this column we report about some of the more recent
activities we've been involved in.
Our motto, still:
Darmstadt is everywhere... |

One
of the most used services of the Jazzinstitut is the Jazz-Index. This
is the world's largest computerbased bibliography on jazz, listing
articles, essays, interviews and much more contained in books and
periodicals of the Jazzinstitut's archive.
The Jazz Index can be used for no fee by everybody, researcher, studend,
fan. How does it work? If you want to know what written information
the Jazzinstitut has on a specific musician, just write us an e-mail
and ask for a free excerpt on this musician from our Jazz Index. We
will respond as soon as your e-mail has been opened. You'll receive
a mail containing a (long) list of articles, essays, interviews and
much more including a short characterisation of what's in the entry.
Here
are some excerpts from our Jazz-Index – bibliographies on:
Louis Armstrong, Paul Bley, Paul Chambers, Don Cherry, Eric
