Europäischer Burghauser Nachwuchs-Jazzpreis 2012
On the occasion of the
40th Internationale Jazzwoche Burghausen/Germany in 2009 the Interessengemeinschaft
Jazz Burghausen e.V. in co-operation with the City of Burghausen called
for the first time for applications to the first European Young Talent
Jazzprize. Since then, the prize is awarded anually.
Target group
Groups (three musicians and more) and Big Bands from Europe
Maximum age of the musicians shall be 30 years (year of birth “1982”
or younger).
Styles
Permitted are all styles of jazz
Endowment
15.000 Euro total amount, divided into 5.000 Euro cash and 10.000
Euro promotional costs, customized to the needs of the band (i.e.
production and distribution of a CD, promotion or band-coaching advices).
Performance
Five bands of the contest will be announced as finalists on December
13, 2011. The final takes place at the first day of the Bughausen
Jazzwoche (March 13, 2012). Travel cost (max 500 Euro per band), accomodation
and free meals will be paid be the promoter.

JIMMY
WOODE AWARD 2010
Art. 1 The Jimmy Woode Award takes place during
the Tuscia in Jazz Festival in the town of Soriano nel Cimino Italy.
Art. 2 The Jimmy Woode Award is reserved to soloists
and jazz bands, Italian or foreign and is open to every musical instrument,
including voice.
Art. 3 Applications to the Jimmy Woode Award must
be received by the 30th of may 2010 (the date will be verified by
postmarks). To subscribe, participants must send an audio CD of theband
with technical information regarding the members of the band, with
name, surname, address and date of birth of each member. Each
band can have a member which is older than 30 ( n° 1 per trio,
n° 2 per quartets or more). To enter the competition the
following documentation is required:- Technical information of each
component including personal data, address of residence,
date of birth, phone number and e-mail -Artistic Curriculum;- CD audio
with at least 3 pieces, standard or unpublished.

Art. 5 Out of all the applicants, 14 semi-finalists
will be selected to perform between the 18/07/2010 to the 24/07/2010
at the Tuscia Jazz Festival. Out of these, 8 finalists will be selected,
that will perform for the Award on the 01 of august 2010. Admission
to the semi-finals will be decided by the Organizing Committee and
the participants will be informed via phone or e-mail by the 30th
of May 2010.
Art. 6 The applications will be examined by the
artistic director through the audio CD. Out of these, the bands that
will participate to the final part of the Award will be selected and
will perform on the 18th, 19th, 20th, 21th, 22th, 23th, 24th of
July 200 at Soriano nel Cimino. Participants will perform in one of
the above stated days in a 45 minute concert. Two bands will perform
each night and at the end of the concert one of the bands will be
eliminated and the other will access directly to the final on the
01 of august 2010. Out of the 7 eliminated bands, one will be repêchaged
for the final. The eight finalists will perform on the 01 of
august 2010 for 15 minutes each. At the end of the concert the Jury
will decide the winners of the 200 edition. Important for evaluation,
is taking place in the jam sessions after the qualifying phase.
Art. 7 The Jimmy Woode Award will take place according
to the following programme:
- 18 of July 2010, at 22:00: N° 2 bands admitted to the semi-finals
will contend access to the finals. Palco Centrale Tuscia in Jazz Festival

- 19 of July 2010, at 22:00: N° 2 bands admitted to the semi-finals

- 20 of July 2010, at 22:00: N° 2 bands admitted to the

Art. 8 Chairman of the Jury will be Shawnn Monteiro,
daughter of the great double bass player of Duke Ellington, Jimmy
Woode. The rest of the Jury will be composed by the Director of the
Festival Italo Leali, and the following world known musicians:
Eddy Gomez, Flavio Boltro, Antonio Sanchez, Kurt Rosenwinkel,
Dado Moroni, Pippo Matino, Rick Margitza, Karl Potter, Giorgio
Rosciglione, Gege Munari, Tony Monaco, Michel Rosciglione, Don Lucof,
Eddy Palermo, Antonio Flinta.
Art. 9 At the end of the evening, the Jury will
assign the following Prizes: Best Band Awards:
1° place: Trophy, Euro 1.000,00 and free entry to the Tuscia in
Jazz Masterclass 2011 Seminary.
2° place: Trophy and free entry to the Tuscia in Jazz Masterclass
2011 Seminary.
3° place: Trophy and free entry to the Tuscia in Jazz Masterclass
2011 Seminary.
A Plate/Prize and the free entry to the Tuscia in Jazz Masterclass
2011 Seminary will be assigned to: Best Double Bass Player, Best Saxophonist,
Best Singer, Best Guitar Player, Best Piano Player, Best Trumpet player
and Best Drummer
Art. 10 Hotel, food and travel expenses are responsibility
of the participants.
Art. 11 The organizing Committee of the Award will
not be held responsible for any accidents that may occur before, during
and after the competition.
Art. 12 Entering the Jimmy Woode Award requires
the full acceptance of the Competition rules and regulations. These
are published in Italian, French and English. In case of any controversy,
the Italian version will be accounted as the true version.

Second
International Kodolanyi Jazz Competition for Young Musicians (2009)
Siófok, Hungary, 6. - 11. May 2009
Siófok will be the capital of jazz in May, as The Second International
Jazz Competition for Young Musicians will be held from the 6th till
the 11th of May 2009. The competition is for actively working jazz-combos
with 3-7 members under age of 30. The performance of the jazz groups
coming from all European countries will be judged by an international
jury, and all applicants will have the possibility to give public
concerts.

Competition rules, prizes:
- The competition is for actively working jazz-combos, being in
a scale of trios, quartets, quintets, sextets and septets. Application
fee: 50 EUR/member
- Age limit is 30; all applicants must be born after the 10th of
May, 1979.
- No stylistic restrictions! - within the art of jazz, all musical
styles are welcome from traditional to modern, from acoustic to
electronic, from mainstream to fusion etc.
- One musician has the right to apply and perform exclusively in
one band!
- The majority of the group members has to have active studies in
a College of Music, but the competition is also opened for graduated
musicians or teachers under 30!
Application deadline: 3rd of April 2009.
Prizes:
1st place: 5000 EUR
2nd place: 3000 EUR
3rd place: 1000 EUR
Winner band will have opportunity to make a professional recording
in the studio of the Performance Department at the Kodolányi
János University College and the possibility to perform one
or more concert in Hungary.
Depending on the level of performances, special prizes might but are
not guaranteed to be announced, such as "Most Promising Group", "Best
Arrangement" or "Best Original Composition" etc. - amount of special
prizes, if any, will be decided by the Jury.

International Jazz Soloist Competition (2009)
Under the High Patronage of His Highness Prince Albert II, Monaco
City Hall is organising the 11th International Jazz Soloist Competition
for all categories of instruments.
Musicians wishing to take part must send an audio recording to:

before the 31 of march 2009
The recording must show the participant performing 2 jazz standards
( and more....) with a rhythmic section.
A specialised jury will select the three best competitors for the
final evening.
The prizes are as follow:

- “Monaco Jazz Chorus” Partner of the Monte-Carlo
Jazz Festival will invite the winner for a concert at the end of
novembre 2009
The final phase will take in public on june 2009, the selected participants
will perform three jazz standards their own choice from a list which
will be mailed to them with the letter announcing their selection.
A rhythmic section ( piano, bass guitar and drums ) will accompany
the candidates during the performance.
The organisers will cover the finalists accommodations costs for

Gexto
Jazz Contest of Groups 2008 (Spain/Europe)
The Gexto Cultural Center
invites jazz groups to submit applications to enter the Group Contest
of the 32nd International Jazz Festival which will be held in Gexto
(located in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country, Spain)
from the 2nd to the 6th of July 2008. The Contest is aimed at European
Jazz Groups.
Entry is open to groups of all musical tendencies and
styles who interpret jazz music. A Selection Committee will choose
four from among all valid applicants. These groups
will perform between the 2nd and the 6th of July. The maximum age
limit of each member of the participating groups is set at 30 years
attained in 2008. The age should be justified together with the application.
The applications for Contest entry should be accompanied by any background
material which demonstrates the quality of the group and in all cases
it is essential to include a CD recorded by the group as well as high
quality photograph. The closing date for reception of entry applications
is the 16th February 2008 at 13.00 hours.
Each group selected will receive a sum in cash of between
900 and 1.800 Euro, including everything (travel, rights, ...).
Accommodation will be at the expense of the organisation. The duration
of each performance will be determined by the Organization and communicated
to the group with sufficient advance notice. The Organization could
set to the selected groups an obligated tune. The Organization will
inform with enough time to prepare it to the selected groups. The
decision of the jury will be final and unappealable and the jury may
adopt whatever decisions they consider fit. The Contest may be recorded
by a TV station.
The prizes are as follows:
First Prize: 3.000 Euro, a trophy and the issue of one
CD;
Second Prize: 1.200 Euro, and a trophy;
Best Soloist: 600 Euro and a trophy
The winning groups will perform again at the Festival.

Internationaler Jazz-Solisten Wettbewerb 2007 (Fribourg / Switzerland)
Der Wettbewerb findet im
Rahmen des Festivals "Jazz Parade" vom 10. bis 12.
Juli 2007 in Fribourg/Schweiz statt und richtet sich an Bläser
und Violinisten.. Waren die beiden ersten Ausgaben des Wettbewerbs
ausschließlich Schweizer MusikerInnen vorbnehalten, steht die
dritte Auflage nun Kandidaten aus allen Ländern offen. Am Wettbewerb
teilnehmen können alle MusikerInnen, die zum Zeitpunkt des Wettbewerbs
jünger als 32 Jahre alt sind. Ziel des Wettbewerbs ist es, junge,
talentierte InstrumentalistInnen zu fördern und zu unterstützen.
Den Vorsitz der Fachjury
übernimmt in diesem Jahr der französische Pianist Martial
Solal. Sie vergibt Preise in einer Gesamthöhe von 16.000 Euro.

Stadtpfeifer:
Internationaler Kompositionswettbewerb für Improvisierte Kammermusik
2007 (Salzburg / Austria)
Die JIMS (summer academy
for Jazz and Improvised Music Salzburg), das vom 16. bis 21.
Juli 2007 sein zehntes Jubiläum feiert, veranstaltet
zum ersten Male einen internationalen Kompositionswettbewerb für
Stücke, deren Augenmerk auch auf Improvisation gelegt wird. Das
ausführende Ensemble - ebenso wie die Jury - ist das JANUS ENSEMBLE
unter der Leitung von Christoph Cech.
Für diesen Wettbewerb
besteht keine Altersbeschränkung; die Siegerstücke werden
im Rahmen des JIMS am 19. Juli vom Janus Ensemble in Salzburg uraufgeführt.
Der genaue Ort wird noch bekanntgegeben.
Einsendeschluss ist der
31.3. 2007, Datum des Poststempels.

International Massimo Urbani Award. International prize for jazz soloist
The associations
“Amici della musica” from Urbisaglia and “Musicamdo”
from Camerino are proud to offer the 11th edition of International
Massimo Urbani Award. This International Award intends to honour the
memory of the legendary roman saxophonist Massimo Urbani, one of the
best musician of the jazz history after Charlie “Yardbird”
Parker, through the finding and enhancement of national and international
up-and-coming young artists.
1st article:
The international Massimo Urbani Award will take place on the 6th,
7th, 8th June 2007 in the cities of Camerino and Urbisaglia (Macerata).
2nd article:
The competition is open to all jazz musicians without restriction
of age, instrument played and nationality. It is possible to participate
for musicians that have already participated, except for the winner
of the previous editions.
3rd article:
Before sending the application form, applicant must send the entrance
form attached to: info@premiomassimourbani.it
Application forms for the IMUA must be sent before the 30th of April
2007 (the postmark will indicate the sending date).
The following documents must be enclosed:
- application form including name, date of birth, address, telephone
number and e-mail address;
- curriculum vitae (CV);
- a good quality recording CD with a minimum of three pieces of music.
The pieces must be standard.

The IMUA performance programme will be the following:
- 6th June 2007, 03:00 pm: Rehearsal of the applicants selected with
the Trio in the room “Sala della Muta” of the beautiful
Ducal Palace of Camerino (applicants must provide to the rhythmic
section the pieces of standard music that they intend to perform);
- 6th June 2007, 07:00 pm: Jam sessions at the ‘Caffè
Concerto’ in Camerino;
- 6th June 2007, 09:30 pm: First performance of the International
Massimo Urbani Award in the room “Sala della Muta” of
the beautiful
Ducal Palace of Camerino;
- 7th June 2007, 03:00 pm: Rehearsal with the Trio and possibility
to choose new pieces of music to perform;
- 7th June 2007, 07:00 pm: Jam sessions at the ‘Caffè
Concerto’ in Camerino;
- 7th June 2007, 09:30 pm: Second performance of the applicants in
the room “Sala della Muta” of the beautiful Ducal Palace
of Camerino; all the applicants will perform and the judges will decide
their admittance to the final qualification;
- 8th June 2007, 03:00 pm: Rehearsal of the applicants selected in

8th article:
The saxophonist Maurizio Urbani (Massimo’s brother) will chair
the jury. Others judges will be Dr. Paolo Piangiarelli (Award Artistic
Director and record producer of the Label Philology Record Company),
two members of the committee and the musicians of the Trio that will
accompany applicants.
9th article:
At the end of the last performance the jury will award the following
prizes:
The first classified musician receives the International Massimo Urbani
Award.
The award consists of a trophy in order to give memory to the roman
saxophonist and a recording with the Philology Record Company.
A special award will be given to the musician that will obtain the
highest votes from the public, apart from the jury classification.
The public can vote its favourite musician in a form that will be
given along with the entrance ticket.
The public will give the forms back during the first performance.
To the second and third classified will be awarded two grants that
allow participation to seminar organised in the best Italian jazz
resorts: Umbria Jazz and Nuoro Jazz.
10th article:
Italian applicants must pay a fee of 30 Euros according to the mode
of payment listed in the attached application form. If applicants
will qualify for the last performance, they must pay an extra fee
of 30 Euros. The total fee amounts to 60 Euros. Non-Italian applicants
are exempt from paying this fee. All applicants must sign the acquittance
that allows the use of audio recording during the event, for future
record publications and for radio broadcast.
11th article:
The organisation will provide accommodation and catering excluding
travel expenses.
12th article:
The organisation will not be liable for any accidents that may happen
during the competition.
13th article:
The IMUA will be recorded from tv SAT “Jazz Around TV”.
14th article:
Entry to the IMUA implies the complete acceptance of this announcement

International Jazz Soloist Competition
Monaco City Hall is organising
the 8th International Jazz Soloist Competition for all categories
of instruments. Musicians wishing to take part must send an audio
tape to : Acadèmie de Musique, 1 boulevard Albert Ier, 98000
- MONACO before the 31 march 2006.
The tape must show the participant performing two jazz
standards, a theme presentation and improvised number with a rhythmic
section. A specialised jury will select the three best competitors
for the final evening. The prize are as follow : 1st 1.500 €,
2nd 1.000 €, 3rd 700 €.
The final phase will take in public the selected participants
will perform three jazz standards their own choice from a list wich
will be mailed to them with the letter announcing their selection
and final date. A rythmic section (piano, bass, guitar and drums)
will accompany the candidates during the performance. The organisers
will cover the finalists accommodation costs breakfast included. The
list of prize winner will be announced after deliberation of the jury
at the end of the performance. The jury's decision will be final.

Prize 2005

Jurybegründung:
Seit er in den frühen neunziger Jahren in Frankreich einem breiteren
Publikum bekannt wurde, fiel der Belgrader Pianist Bojan Zulfikarpasic
nicht nur durch seine große Musikalität auf, sondern auch
durch eine verblüffende Vielseitigkeit. Klassischer Jazz, Rockmusik,
Volksmusik verschiedenster (balkanischer) Provenienz und die auch
abendländische klassische Tradition scheinen in seinem Spiel
auf eine geradezu selbstverständliche Art und Weise integriert
zu sein. 1968 in einem hochmusikalisches Elternhaus in Belgrad geboren,
entdeckte Bojan Zulfikarpasic bereits als Fünfjähriger das
Piano und die Gitarre und machte auf beiden Instrumenten erstaunliche
Fortschritte, vor allem dank seinem Gehör mit dem er schon früh
die richtigen Harmonien zu den Melodien fand, die er nachspielte.
Mit dieser schon fast jazzmäßigen Attitüde entdeckte
er schnell die auch die Beatles, brasilianische Musik und die Klassiker
Bach, Ravel und Debussy für sich. Nach einem Semester in Amerika
und dem Militärdienst in der Heimat übersiedelte er als
Zwanzigjähriger nach Paris und fand dort schnell Kontakt zu Musikern
wie dem Gitarristen Noëk Akchoté, und später zum
Meisterbassisten Henri Texier und dem in jeder Beziehung außergewöhnlichen
Klarinettisten und Multiinstrumentalisten Michel Portal. Mit ihnen
konnte er seine Vision einer eigenen Musik, die irgendwo zwischen
Jazz und einem weit gefassten Volksmusikbegriff steht, weiterentwickeln.
Seine bisher fünf unter eigenem Namen erschienenen Alben für
das französische Label Bleu dokumentieren diese Arbeit auf eindrückliche
Weise. Gerade das jüngste Trioalbum "Transpacifik"
(2003) mit den beiden New Yorkern Scott Colley (Bass) und Nasheet
Waits (Schlagzeug) weist ihn zweifellos als großen europäischen
Jazzmusiker aus. Hier fließen der amerikanische Jazz und die
europäischen Wurzeln von Bojan Zulfikarpa?i? auf harmonische
aber auch faszinierende Weise zusammen. Der Pianist brilliert hier
in einem neuen Ambiente mit einem melodischen Erfindungsreichtum und
einer rhythmischen Raffinesse, die ihresgleichen suchen. Bojan Zulfikarpasic
ist nie stehen geblieben, sondern scheint ständig auf der Suche.
Dabei hat er sich stets aktiv mit neuen Umgebungen auseinandergesetzt.
Und seine Musik hat dabei immer profitiert. Konsequenter kann man
die Vision von einem neuen Europa nicht umsetzen. Bojan Zulfikarpasic
ist der ideale Musiker für den European Jazz Prize 2005.

Jurybegründung:
Harry Sokal gehört seit Jahren zu den profiliertesten Saxophon-Spielern
der heimischen, wenn nicht gar der europäischen Jazzszene. Sein
Markenzeichen sind vor allem funky und atemberaubend rasante Soli.
Das Treibende, Schnelle seiner Person schlägt sich in seinem
kompromisslos groovigen, oft leicht ungeduldigen Spiel nieder, das
aber auch einen lyrischen Ton nicht missen lässt. Harry Sokal
war Teil des Art Farmer Quintetts und bildete einen heißen Gegenpol
zum elegant-coolen Sound Farmers. Seit 1977 gehört er zum Vienna
Art Orchestra und auch international spielt er seit langem in der
ersten Liga (Gulda, Zawinul, Holland, Blakey, Portal, u.v.m.). Für
sein Projekt Full Circle holte Sokal sich keine geringeren als seinen
Lieblings-Schlagzeuger, den Schweizer Jojo Mayer, den Percussionisten
Stephan Maass, den US-Bassisten Gerald Veasley und den polnischen
Keyboarder Vladislav Sendecki. Im vergangenen Jahr überzeugte
Sokal live und auf CD mit seinen eigenen Projekten "Roots Ahead"
und mit "Voices of Time", das er gemeinsam mit Wolfgang
Puschnig realisierte. Darüber hinaus war er als Mitglied des
Vienna Art Orchestra, bei Gansch & Roses und als Gastsolist auf

Martin Reiter ist einer jener Pianisten, die sich in den Stilen der
verschiedenen Epochen des Jazz nicht nur daheim fühlen, sondern
sie auch so spielen können, als wären sie wirklich dabei
gewesen. Ob Latin, Stride Piano, zeitgenössischer Jazz oder Big
Band, Martin Reiter ist nicht nur eines der größten heimischen
Talente sondern wird auch als ein überaus lebendiger junger Musiker
und Arrangeur geschätzt. Im Vordergrund steht neben der Virtuosität
auch der Witz - ein nicht unwesentliches Element. Ausgebildet in Linz,
Wien, Den Haag und New York nutzte der 27-Jährige jede Gelegenheit
den Jazz von allen Seiten kennen zu lernen. 2002 gewann er den "Young
Lions"-Wettbewerb des Jazzfest Wien und tourte durch die europäische
Festivalszene, im gleichen Jahr gewann er das "New York Stipendium"
des Hans Koller Preises, für den er letztes Jahr bereits als
"Newcomer" nominiert wurde. Überzeugend auch seine
musikalische Verarbeitung seiner Eindrücke aus New York, die
er auf seinem Anfang 2005 erschienenen Debüt-Album "Chez
es Saada" festgehalten fest gehalten hat. Hier wird in Solo-,
Trio-, Quartett- und Orchesterbesetzung musiziert und Unterschiedlichstes
hervor gebracht. Besonders gelungen ist hier die Zusammenarbeit mit
dem Streicherorchester "Feuerhaus", auf die Reiter größten

Auf "confessions" setzt Sharrocks Stimme neue Maßstäbe
im Jazzgesang und zeigt, dass wahres Phrasieren ein Fühlen voraussetzt.
Damit bietet Sharrock nicht nur ein rares Hörerlebnis sondern
setzt auch ein Zeichen, dass der Jazz nicht nur eine Stilistik unter
vielen ist, sondern dass seine Stärke vor allem darin liegt,
dass hier Emotionalität und Lebensgefühl ihren musikalischen
Ausdruck finden. "confessions" ist Sharrocks erstes Album
nach ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit Wolfgang Puschnig und der 2002 erschienenen
CD "Chants". Leise, aber nachdrücklich widmet sich
Sharrock voller Hingabe der Song-Interpretation. Gleich zu Beginn
lässt einen das Intro zu "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless
Child" verstummen. Die Lieder, deren Texte allesamt aus Sharrocks
Feder stammen, drücken die ungestillte Sehnsucht eines Menschen
aus, der tief und intensiv empfindet. Und es ist in diesem Fall kein
Vergehen, sondern eine Notwendigkeit, die menschliche Komponente mit
einzubeziehen. Ihre französischen Mitmusiker, der Pianist Stephan
Oliva und der Bassist Claude Tchamitchian schaffen für Sharrock
einen Rahmen voller lyrischer Melodien und rhythmischer Andeutungen.
Sharrocks subtiler, fordernder Sound gestattet eine Intimität
fernab des Voyeurismus, wie sie sonst nur live zu erfahren ist. Es
sind tatsächlich Seelen-Geständnisse, die hier festgehalten
wurden. "confessions" ist ein kompromissloses Album, roh

Jurybegründung:
Hans Strasser gilt als einer der zuverlässigsten und beständigsten
Musiker der heimischen Szene. Aber es sind nicht zuletzt auch sein
warmherziger Charakter und seine stützende Präsenz, die
ihn zum stillen Zentrum einer Performance werden lassen. Strasser
ist der Prototyp eines sideman. In allen Stilen zu Hause, wenngleich
mit einer Vorliebe für Contemporary Jazz. Originell ohne angeberisch
zu wirken, in der Tradition verankert, wenn auch nicht verhaftet.
Jüngst gründete er gemeinsam mit der Percussionistin und
Hans-Koller-Preisträgerin Ingrid Oberkanins und der Pianistin
Monika Etzelt das musikalisch wie menschlich in höchstem Maße
interessante Trio E.O.S. Strasser spielt Ellington mit dem gebührenden
Respekt und der richtigen Portion Swing ebenso, wie er im zeitgenössischen
Jazz zu Hause ist. Umtriebig war Strasser auch Ende der 90er Jahre
im "Trio N" gemeinsam mit Klaus Dickbauer und Uli Scherer.
Die Liste der Musiker, mit denen der auffällig-unauffällige
Bassman zu hören war, reicht weiter von Uli Rennert über
seine langjährige musikalische Partnerin Cornelia Giese bis hin
zu Aron Wonesch oder Oliver Kent. Und, um die Querverbindung nicht
zu vergessen, gemeinsam mit Joris Dudli bildete Strasser - ob als
Johannes, Hans, oder Hannes, daran scheiden sich die Geister - die
Rhythmuseinheit im Fritz Pauer Trio.
New York Stipendium

Jurybegründung:
Das vom Vorstand des Austrian Music Office initiierte und vom renommierten
Wiener Saitenhersteller Thomastik-Infeld finanzierte Arbeitsstipendium
für einen mehrmonatigen New York Aufenthalt wird wie auch in
den vergangenen Jahren mit Christoph Auer und Bastian Stein wieder
an zwei junge begabte Jazzmusiker aufgeteilt.
Christof Auer (1981) studierte in Innsbruck und Graz.
Seine erste CD realisierte er mit seinen renommierten Alterskollegen
Martin Reiter, Matthias Pichler und Clemens Marktl. Auer, der sich
durch seinen vollen Ton am Altsaxophon auszeichnet und über eine
außergewöhnliche technische Instrumentalbeherrschung verfügt,
fällt durch energetische, melodische Bögen auf, die er auch
über diffizile Harmonien und Rhythmen setzen kann. Zudem zeigt
er schon jetzt kompositorische Talente, mit denen er sich eine jeweils
passende Form für seine überzeugenden Soloausflüge
schafft.
Bastian Stein (1983) begann bereits im Alter von 10 Jahren
an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien
mit dem Studium der klassischen Trompete. Vor zwei Jahren wechselte
er, wie momentan viele junge Musiker ans Konservatorium in Amsterdam.
Wieder zurück in Österreich, wo er unterdessen mit zahlreichen
Formationen zu hören ist, zeichnet ihn sein warmer und voller
Ton aus, der manchmal an Chet Baker erinnert. Und sein melodisches
Gespür, in der besten Jazztradition verhaftet, überlässt
nichts dem Zufall. Auf den ersten Blick vielleicht ein unspektakulärer
Musiker - dafür mit umso mehr musikalischem Tiefgang und Sinn
fürs Wesentliche.
Die Preisverleihung findet
am 9. Dezember 2005 um 20h, das Konzert des European Jazz Prize -
Trägers am 10. Dezember 2005 um 20h, beides im Porgy & Bess,
Riemergasse 11, 1010 Wien statt.

The European Tremplin
Jazz d'Avignon announce the opening of the candidacies for the contest
2005!
The Association organizes a competition which is aimed to promote
young jazz musicians or young jazz bands. It's open to any European
bands (and can also open to the countries outside European Union),
from duet to sextet.
Two modes of candidacies
are possible :
1.) For Norwegian, Belgian,
Italian and Danish candidates : to adress itself directly to the correspondent
"Tremplin Jazz " of their country (see the regulation)
2.) For all other candidacies: by sending their file of inscription
to the office of Association.
We recall that the winner of this european contest is offered the
first act of an international artist and the recording of a professionnal
CD at the studio La Buissonne in Pernes Les Fontaines (wich in particular
carried out the recordind of CDs "Dans la Nuit" of Louis
Sclavis, "Poetic Motion" of Marc Copland and "Vents
et Marées" of Jean-Sebastien Simonoviez). The bands can

Jazz Group Contest 2005 (Spain)
The Gexto Cultural Center
invites jazz groups to submit applications to enter the Group Contest
of the 29th International Jazz Festival which will be held in Gexto
(located in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country, Spain)
from the 1st to the 5th of July 2005. The Contest is aimed at European
Jazz Groups.
Entry is open to groups of all musical tendencies and
styles who interpret jazz music. A Selection Committee will choose
four from among all valid applicants. These groups will perform between
the 1st and the 5th of July. The maximum age limit of each member
of the participating groups is set at 30 years attained in 2005. The
age should be justified together with the application. The applications
for Contest entry should be accompanied by any background material
which demonstrates the quality of the group and in all cases it is
essential to include a CD recorded by the group as well as high quality
photograph. The closing date for reception of entry applications is
the 19th February 2005 at 13.00 hours.
Each group selected will receive a sum in cash of between
900 and 1800 Euro, including everything (travel, rights, ...).
Accommodation will be at the expense of the organisation. The duration
of each performance will be determined by the Organization and communicated
to the group with sufficient advance notice. The Organization could
set to the selected groups an obligated tune. The Organization will
inform with enough time to prepare it to the selected groups. The
decision of the jury will be final and unappealable and the jury may
adopt whatever decisions they consider fit. The Contest may be recorded
by a TV station.
The prizes are as follows:
First Prize: 3000 Euro, a trophy and the issue of one
CD;
Second Prize: 1200 Euro, and a trophy;
Best Soloist: 600 Euro and a trophy
The winning groups will perform again at the Festival.

Jazz Prize 2004 (Austria)
The Austrian Music Offic
(AMO) is an officially-recognized association established in 1996
by mathias rüegg to organize and present Austria's major jazz
award: the Hans Koller Preis. The AMO Board is formed by mathias rüegg
(president), Heinrich von Kalnein, Ulrich Rennert, and Eva Salfellner.
Since 1996, prizes in various categories have been awarded to outstanding
austrian jazz musicians.
The European Jazz Prize (EUR 14.500,-) is a new categorie of the Hans
Koller Preis established in 2002. Jury members of 23 european countries
nominate 23 european musicians and select the musician of the year
who has attracted major attention on a high artistic level in the
international jazz field, in the year before.
The Prize will be awarded on December 3, 2004 at the Porgy & Bess
in Vienna.
The concert by the prize winner will take place on December 4, 2004
at the Porgy & Bess in Vienna.

Copenhagen, Mayor of the Danish capital, Jens Kramer Mikkelsen, presented
Prize Winner Andrew Hill with the JAZZPAR Statuette and a cash award
of DKK 200,000 (approximately USD 30,000).
On the same occasion, The International JAZZPAR Prize
Committee announced the five nominees for the 15th JAZZPAR Prize,
the world?s largest award of its kind. It is now official that The
JAZZPAR Prize Winner 2004 is the Italian drummer, composer and ensemble
leader Aldo Romano ? the second Italian and sixth European out of
15 prize-winners since 1990.
Romano will perform with a combo at a number of concerts
culminating with the Prize Concert in TIVOLI, Sunday afternoon April
25, 2004.

Prize Concert, The International JAZZPAR Prize Committee announced
the five nominees for the 15th JAZZPAR Prize, the world's largest
award of its kind. Due to practical circumstances the final winner
will be proclaimed later this year. The following names are presented

The international
Prize Committee
The panel of acknowledged jazz authorities headed
by its non-voting chairman, Cim Meyer (Denmark), had the following
members in 2003: Dan Morgenstern (USA), Brian Priestley (Great Britain),
Alex Dutilh (France), Filippo Bianchi (Italy) plus Boris Rabinowitsch
and Peter H. Larsen (Denmark).
The Jazzpar Prize Criteria
Many candidates are discussed every year. To reach
its decisions The Committee has only a few predetermined criteria
or rather guidelines to follow, the most important being that The
Prize can be awarded only to an internationally known and fully active
jazz artist who is specially deserving of further acclaim. A great
number of jazz musicians fully satisfy such criteria.
Openness a keyword
It has never been the intention of Jazzpar that
The Winners should represent a special artistic approach, style or
line. On the contrary, it has always been essential for The Committee
to manifest openness. The aim is not to bestow still another honor
on those already firmly established in Easy Street - but as occasion
requires to broaden the scope, to stimulate and facilitate the activity
of choice artists. The quality of the music and the situation in which
it is created are the decisive factors. The long-term vision is that
society some day and to the full extent will acknowledge jazz as one
of the important art forms of our time.

The next Prize Presentation
The Jazzpar Gala Concert will take place in Denmark
April 2004. The JAZZPAR Project continues to include a number of activities:
rehearsals, a prize concert tour, radio and television broadcasts,
recordings for CD releases, etc.

Aargauer
Kuratorium vergibt 359 000 Franken
Aargau / Schweiz - Das
Aargauer Kuratorium hat für dieses Jahr 359 000 Franken an Förderungsbeiträgen
für Klassik, Jazz und Film vergeben. Erneut in den Genuss einer
Unterstützung kommt der Zürcher Filmemacher Samir.
Im vergangenen Jahr hatte das Aargauer Kuratorium Samirs
Film Forget Baghdad unterstützt. Die Jury sei überzeugt,
dass sie mit dem Herstellungsbeitrag von 30 000 Franken an Samirs
Spielfilmprojekt Snow White wiederum ein wichtiges Zeichen setze,
heisst es in einem Communiqué.
Im Bereich Klassik/Jazz sprach die Jury 176 000 Franken
an Beiträgen und 21 Monate Atelieraufenthalt in London, Paris
und Prag. Die Jury Film genehmigte 141 000 Franken an Beiträgen
für das künstlerische Schaffen sowie für Drehbuch-
und Herstellungsbeiträge.
Übergeben werden die Beiträge am 28. Juni im
Rahmen einer öffentlichen Feier in Frick.

Mahler Prei für Komposition, Kategorie Big Band (Austria)
Das Viktring
Musikforum schreibt zum 7. Mal den "Gustav Mahler Kompositionspreis
der
Stadt Klagenfurt" aus. Ausgeschrieben wird ein Konzert für Big
Band mit zwei zusätzlichen Solisten.
Teilnahmebedingungen
Zur Teilnahme an dem 7. Kompositionspreis der Stadt Klagenfurt
sind Komponistinnen und Komponisten jeglicher Nationalität eingeladen.
Die eingesandten Werke dürfen zum Einreichungstermin und bis
zum Zeitpunkt des Preisträgerkonzertes (2. August 2001) weder
veröffentlicht noch uraufgeführt worden sein. Die Urheber
stellen das Notenmaterial (Dirigierpartitur und Stimmen) unentgeltlich
rechtzeitig zur Verfügung. Pro Teilnehmer darf nur ein Werk eingereicht
werden.
Ausschreibung
Ausgeschrieben wird ein Konzert für Big Band mit
zwei zusätzlichen Solisten. Die Ausführenden sind: Nouvelle
Cuisine Bigband unter der Leitung von Christoph Cech und Christian
Mühlbacher
Benjamin Schmid (Violine, auch E-Violine), Wolfgang Muthspiel (Gitarre,
auch E-Gitarre)
Mit diesen Ausführenden steht eine Besetzung zur
Verfügung, die mühelos genreübergreifend agieren kann.
So soll es zu den Anliegen der teilnehmenden KomponistInnen zählen,
das musikalische Umfeld um die ungewöhnliche Besetzung in spartenübergreifendem
Sinne experimentierfreudig zu gestalten. Dies bedeutet z.B. für
aus dem Jazzbereich Kommende, mehr tonale und atonale Möglichkeiten
aus der Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts zu verarbeiten, als sonst im Jazz
üblich. Aus dem E-Bereich Kommende sind eingeladen, die durch
Jazz so angereicherte Ästhetik konkreter Rhythmik schätzen
zu lernen und in ihr Werk einzubinden. Darüber hinaus soll Improvisation
- von strukturiert bis frei, von Solo bis Kollektiv - ein wichtiger
Bestandteil der kompositorischen Überlegungen sein. Dauer: 10
bis 15 Minuten.

Es werden von der Landeshauptstadt Klagenfurt folgende Preise vergeben:

3. Preis: ATS 30.000,-
5) Einsendemodus
Die Kompositionen sind
in Form einer acht Mal (8x) kopierten Partitur (gebunden, Seiten durchnumeriert,
der Name der/des KomponistenIn darf nirgends aufscheinen, alle Deckblattkopien
müssen mit dem Titel des Stückes versehen sein) bis 7. Mai
2001 (es gilt das Datum des Poststempels) an das Musikforum Viktring-Klagenfurt,
Stift-Viktring-Straße 25, A-9073 Klagenfurt-Viktring, Kennwort
"Gustav Mahler Kompositionspreis 2001" einzureichen. Das ausgefüllte
und unterschriebene Anmeldeformular ist in einem verschlossenen Kuvert,
auf dem nur der Titel der Komposition vermerkt sein darf, beizulegen.
Uraufführungen
Die Kompositionen der drei PreisträgerInnen kommen am 2. August
2001 zur Uraufführung.
Die preisgekrönten KomponistenInnen geben ihre Zustimmung, dass
der ORF eine Live-Aufnahme und spätere Ausstrahlung vornimmt.
Die Preisträger werden eingeladen, an den Proben für die
Uraufführungen teilzunehmen. Die Unterbringungs- sowie die Reisekosten
(Bahnfahrt 2. Klasse) trägt das MUSIKFORUM VIKTRING.
