"Der Jazzbrief" hieß eine Publikation, die Aktivitäten des Jazzinstituts Darmstadt beleuchtete, kleinere Beiträge publizierte, die sich aus der täglichen Arbeit des Jazzinstituts ergaben. Wir haben uns entschlossen, den Jazzbrief fürs erste elektronisch fortzuführen. Hier wollen wir Gedanken und Diskussionen öffentlich machen, die wir im Jazzinstitut führen, laden alle Leser dazu ein, sich an diesen Diskussionen zu beteiligen und uns ihre eigene Meinung mitzuteilen. Wir berichten über Sammlungszuwächse und sonstige Aktivitäten. Es handelt sich bei den Beiträgen auf dieser Seite nirgends um feststehende "Wahrheiten" über den Jazz, sondern um eine Sammlung von Notizen, Gedanken und Diskussionsbeiträgen.

"The Jazzletter" was a publication in which the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt reported about some of its activities and published short essays, results from the daily work at the Jazzinstitut. We decided to continue the Jazzletter electronically, publishing some of our thoughts and internal discussions and inviting everyone to participate and tell us what they think. We also report about additions to the jazz collection of the Jazzinstitut and other acitivities. This is a collection of notes, thoughts and discussions more than a statement of "truths" about jazz.

Jazz im Goethe-Garten, Lissabon

Das Jazzinstitut Darmstadt hat die Ausstellung "Deutscher Jazz / German Jazz" kuratiert, die für die nächsten fünf Jahre in Goethe-Instituten überall auf der Welt zu sehen sein wird. Eine Station konnten wir Anfang Juli selbst in Augenschein nehmen, als nämlich die Ausstellung während der Konzertreihe "Jazz im Goethe-Garten" im Goethe-Institut Lissabon eröffnet wurde. Die Ausstellung ist im großzügigen Foyer des portugiesischen Hauptstadtinstituts zu sehen; zur Eröffnung am 3. Juli reiste Wolfram Knauer an den Tejo und hielt einen Vortrag "Was ist deutsch am deutschen Jazz?". Und da Bilder und Vorträge über Musik doch immer etwas trocken sind, gab es auch Musik, an diesem Abend vom Duo Günter 'Baby' Sommer (Schlagzeug) und Raymond MacDonald (Saxophon). The Jazzinstitut had conceived the exhibition "Deutscher Jazz / German Jazz" which will travel around the world for the Goethe-Institut throughout the next five years. We were able to see one station of their trip in early July when the exhibition was opened at Lisbon's Goethe-Institut during the concert series "Jazz im Goethe-Garten". The exhibition can be seen in the spacious foyer of the institute in Portugal's capital; for the opening on July 3rd Wolfram Knauer gave a speech asking "What is so German about German jazz?" And as photos and speeches about music may be a bit dry, there was music as well, on this evening provided by the duo Günter 'Baby' Sommer (drums) and Raymond MacDonald (saxophone).
